ISP Update / January, 2007
GREETINGS
By now, most ISP faculty members are back in the university settings, most ISP non faculty are lobbying their respective legislative bodies, and all of our friends are connecting policy to practice somewhere in these United States. This January Update is a welcome to 2007 and a brief resume of what you might consider in order to promote our mission. Please visit www.statepolicy.org to refresh yourselves of our vision and resources. ISP Liaisons in our university social work departments are reminded of the following:
1. The ISP national contest is well underway and I encourage you and your students to read the regulations and criteria for participation in this year's contest. Go to: http://www.statepolicy.org/contest/official-rules.html for all requirements. Our goal is to have an entry from EACH program in the country. Submissions this year are online, so please ask everyone to pay attention to the procedures. May 7 is the deadline. As you know, we have wonderful, creative and challenging entries every year by students and faculty who are committed to influencing state policies. Please join in this year and do not delay!
2. ISP 2007 dues are overdue. You may have lost or misplaced the form to send in. Go to the website under About Us at http://www.statepolicy.org/about_us/index.html and download the form and send in your $25 annual dues. It is our most important source of revenue. Please do not forget to make your contribution.
3. I urge you to notify me by email of the number of students who visit the state capital this year(Fall 06-Spring 07). Our goal is to have 8,000+ visits this year. Texas is in session this year and that alone is worth 1,000! Please organize your students to visit their representatives and then let me know so I can tally each state.
4. Since CSWE is meeting in October in San Francisco, ISP will hold its annual meeting there as well. More info will be available as dates become set. We will have a booth (no auction this time) and will promote our mission. Student awards will also be bestowed here.
5. Amy Conley, a PhD student from the University of California, Berkeley School of Social Welfare, is the recipient of ISP's annual PhD Dissertation award of $2000. Congrats to Amy, her advisor, ISP member, Dr. Jill Duerr Berrick, and the Berkeley Program. Her dissertation title and study is: An Assessment of Differential Response: Implications for State Policy and Social Work Practice. Amy will give a brief presentation at our annual meeting in San Francisco in October. Thanks to our 7 ISP judges for their work in assessing the entries.
6. The new video in our Policy Affects Practice series about legislative coalition building is being developed now. A script will be finished in February and shooting is currently taking place. Estimated availability is late 2007.
That is the latest. Please take an active role in our annual activities: contest, tally of visits to the capitals, pay your dues, and promoting our videos and materials among students, faculty and practitioners. Right now, that is where the action is: the state legislature! All the best.....Bob
