ISP Update / March, 2007
GREETINGS
Greetings ISP members....
Time goes by so quickly especially if spring break gets in the mix......I hope you had a good break if you are in academe or if not, had a few good days to yourself doing some satisfying but non required tasks. A few updates from Influencing State Policy for March 07 follow:
Thank you for sending in your $25 dues.......you can still do so if you have the form or can download it under About Us on the website, www.statepolicy.org.
The ISP annual contest is coming up......May 7 is the deadline.....get your student entries ready to be sent in this year by email. See the rules, of course, on the website at www.statepolicy.org. Exemplars of previous winning entries are also there for you and your students to view.
One of our members and Board of Advisors, Dr. Victor Manolo of California State University, Los Angeles, just won election to the Artesia, CA City Council by a landslide 62% to 38%......as we all know in principle, persistence is important: this was Victor's third attempt! Way to go, Victor!! His email is: vmanalo@exchange.calstatela.edu
Two of our sponsors have contributed to our annual fund raising campaign: Dr. Michael Sherraden at the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis and Dr. Barbara White of the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. We are always looking for additional sponsors. Let me know if you think someone might be willing to help us out. Many thanks to Barbara and Michael.
The script for the coalition building video for our ISP series has been drafted and we have some interviews completed and some B-roll shot. In mid April, Suzanne Gore and Tasha Bullock and I will be refining our script and begin producing the actual video. Our completion date remains this Fall, 2007. Remember that all ISP members will receive this video as part of their membership fees.......as well as all or any of the other five videos. Soon, I think that we will be providing the videos in DVD and VHS formats.....right now, we only have VHS. What would be your preference or requirement now, given the type of equipment your program uses?
Plans for the Biannual Policy Practice Forum in Washington, DC will be formulated soon. This is usually a mid-Atlantic event where about 300 social work students meet on Capitol Hill with social workers in Congress, aides, agency heads, advocates, etc. More details after the committee moves into action. It has usually been in the Fall.....every other year. 07 is the next scheduled one.
The Policy Conference, sponsored by VCU School of Social Work and ISP, is awaiting word on some extra funding. As soon as I learn about the financial status of the conference, I will inform you. This is a conference sponsored every other year and is dedicated particularly to policy related research, teaching, and analysis. The Journal of Policy Practice usually publishes some of the papers in a special edition.
Rememeber that April 27 is the deadline for submissions to the APM of the Council on Social Work Education in San Francisco, October 27-29. ISP will hold its annual meeting there and we are sponsoring a booth.
ISP has signed on with NASW' state of the art Social Work Portal at www.socialworkers.org. It promises to be an excellent site for multiple sources of information for all social workers, students, faculty, etc.
Here is the list of states and the number of student visits to the state legislature.....the numbers are as accurate as they have been reported to me.....but it seems there is much more reporting to me to be done.....remember, our goal this year is 9,000 student visits. Please let me know your estimates asap.
